Ok so I've fixed it. I just had to change the filename (why??!) After all that, it isn't that interesting, but a relief to not be beaten. It's here, or follow the link to the left.

I have no idea why the book link doesn't work. Beyond me. Have emailed my support people only they are Japanese so it should be interesting...
Went to a different cooking class today, which was fun. We made okonomiyake, which is a kind of pancakey omelettey thing, very delicious ('totemo oishii'). And so easy! I think we'll be eating it a lot! (If I can just get my hands on some mountain yam, which goes in the batter. I've never seen it for sale - but then, I haven't looked. It just kind of looks like a stretched, extra muddy, potato). Then I went to the posh gallery shop in Hiroo to buy a wedding pressy for my sister. Hope she likes it...
Think I might have sunstroke from all the tramping about outside. Had better get over it quick though, as tomorrow we are off to the Fuji rock festival!

WHY doesn't it work?!!!
Bear with me...book list up soon I promise...

Since I acquired this site I've naturally been keeping an eye on what other blogs contain. There's a lot of them out there...but it is definitely the thing to do to put a list of books you're reading/have recently read. And what do you know? I've been keeping a list this year, just out of interest (and because Pauline in Runcorn does it and it seemed like a good idea). So here it is; you can also get to it by clicking on 'reading' over on the left there. I'm not sure what it says about me...that I like thrillers and don't care for non-fiction? Surely nothing deeper than that. Ignore the bit at the bottom - I intend eventually to put some stuff about the books I particularly like. But it's not there yet...
Haven't done anything of note today. I'm melting, I'm melting. Am almost looking forward to going back to Britain next week for a breath of fresh air. No wait, that doesn't sound right. I'm obviously looking forward to going home - Suz's wedding will be good, see my friends and family and the cats*, eat smarties and opal fruit ice lollies and whatnot - but what I am looking forward to most is some genuine, outdoor cool air! I will (probably) never complain about British summers again.
*obviously this is the single most exciting thing. Can't wait. Hope they haven't forgotten me.

Last night we watched Being John Malkovich on video. what the *!$%^ was that all about? V enjoyable though; I do recommend it if you like your films...well..odd. There's a review of it here that I like - "the work of a demented genius" is probably accurate.
Been busy today - went cooking this morning. A private lesson because everyone else has gone away for the summer! I made kakiage, carrot salad (?!) and miso soup. Rather bizarrely, she made me a present of some tempura paper and a small bag of green peppers when I left: how nice! Eventually I will get around to putting the recipes online but for now, here's a link to a nice Japanese home-cooking site. Once I'd finished there I trawled all the way up to Asakusa to buy some secret things at the temple - both of our entire families have had their birthdays since we've been away!
One last thing: pics from our second world-cup excursion are here. No writing yet (Cameron has to do words, I just do pictures. I can't even remember what the score was (though I know Ireland won!) so not much point me trying to write about it...).

It's a funny thing, learning a new language. There's a box in my brain marked 'foreign' and it has no internal filing at all. How often have I tried to get a Japanese phrase out, only to find schoolgirl French or German coming to my rescue? Words I didn't know I knew are being dredged up from the depths of my mind. Not much use to me though, I'd have a much better chance of being understood if I could find the Japanese instead...

oh dear. went to good day books today...was so excited by all those lovely english-language books at reasonable prices*, that I bought six. six! Is that terribly extravagant? In theory I could take them back and exchange them once I've read them. But that's not likely to happen, is it.

*the observer, without its colour supplements and a week out of date, costs 1000 yen**. new english-language books are in the region of 2000 yen. 450 yen for a book, any book, is a bargain!
**about a fiver

A dancing spiderman eh?
What will they think of next?

Things I love about Japan #1. I was on the subway today, at about a quarter past nine or so - not rush-hour busy, but the train was full. I'd been lucky and fast enough to get a seat, so as we approached my stop I stood up and started squeezing towards the door. When the doors opened there were still two men blocking my way but, to my relief, they got off. Both waited by the door and bowed as I passed, then got back on and continued on their way.

Back again. Yes, I am supposed to be working. Just wanted to post Cameron's stuff about our trip to Kobe (it's not finished!), and try some photos (OK, one photo. of our garden. which everyone's already seen!), as I'm still testing how this all works

Ok, here goes. I’m new to all this so you’ll have to excuse if it seems a bit clunky at first. I wonder whether anyone will look at it? Hope so, it must be better than clogging up people’s inboxes with photos (sorry Dad). I wonder whether I will keep it up and get addicted or whether, in the manner of new-year diaries, it will start all nice and shiny with a proud new entry (usually a list of resolutions. 1: I will be a better person. 2: I will keep this diary) then by the end of the week be gathering dust in a drawer.
Today I am stuck inside while a typhoon does its thing. I am still not sure what the difference between a typhoon and monsoon is but I think it has something to do with which ocean it is in. Or is that hurricanes? Anyway, it seems that Japan is at least as good as the UK when it comes to weather; more than enough variety to keep even me content. No Peter Sloss though, and BBC world weather has far too much ‘world’ for my liking: sometimes they miss Japan out altogether! Still, I suppose it’s nice to know what’s going on at home as well. Winnipeg has by far the worst weather, I never want to go there.
